Membership

Membership is available as follows:

Flying Membership of the VMFG entitles the member to all phases of the
instruction and access to fly the club aircraft according to the ratings held. All
instruction is provided by GFA qualified instructors to lead members to solo
standard and beyond.
Family Flying Membership is for an immediate family member of a
Flying Member who is not in receipt of a separate full-time income.
Student Membership is open to students in full-time education.
Associate Membership is effectively a social membership and this
allows a small number of flights at club rates but does not include any
instruction.
Pilot Progression
A novice pilot is called an "Ab Initio" - Latin for "From the beginning".
An Ab Initio pilot will be learning basic flying skills, rules of the air and other
topics to take them to the point where they can fly solo.
Going solo is a major landmark in any pilot's carrer, however there is still
much to learn and Post-Solo training is structured to take a pilot to the stage
where they can safely and efficiently take their glider Cross Country.
There is no pressure to progress beyond this stage - or even as far as this -
but for those keen to fly competitively, there is a range from 'fun' local events
up to State, National and International competitions.
Any club always needs to be developing new Instructors and many pilots gain
great satisfaction by passing on their skills and experience to the next
generation. Power pilots might also consider working towards a Tug Pilot
rating.
Many members enjoy learning how to maintain - and even build - gliders and
we have a number of members who are highly experienced in this area and
would happily share their knowledge.
